The Old Kootenai County Jail Museum is located in the original 1892 Kootenai County Jail building. The nonprofit Rathdrum/Westwood Historical Society purchased the building in 2006 to save it from demolition, raised private funds for the 2010 restoration, and opened to the public in 2012. The Museum is one of the few Rathdrum buildings to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Open to the public summer weekends from 12pm - 4 pm, private tours are available by appointment year round. These have included public school, homeschool, library, and adult activity groups. We host the annual Haunted Jail fundraiser near Halloween, and make it a priority to contribute annually to the community through various programs.
The R/WHS is invested in maintaining the 1892 building, and expanding membership to provide greater benefit to the community. We welcome all history enthusiasts who would like to share their expertise.
